Badhakathipathi
We already discussed about Badhaka and Maraka houses that are formed with respect
to Ascendant and nature of Ascendant such as Chara, Sthira and Upaya.
Just to recap, in a Horoscope the Badhaka House for Chara Signs is 11th house,
for Sthira Signs it is 9th house and for Upaya Signs it is 7th house from the Ascendant. The table below illustrates it pictorially.
The Lord of Badhaka house is known as Badhakathipathi. Badhaka means hindrance. As it is a functional role, Badhakathipathi can be either a
natural Benefic Planet or a Malefic Planet. However, the result pronounced by
Badhakathipathi, whether it is Benefic or Malefic, will be very harmful.
The good part is that it will pronounce its harmful effect under certain circumstances only.

The effect of Badhakathipathi will be very harmful when it is,
1. Not associated with either Benefic or Malefic
2. Posited in the Badhaka house or not posited in 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th house to Badhaka house
When Badhakathipathi is associated with either a Benefic or a Malefic, its ability to perform the functional role of Badhaka or hindrance
will be lost and as such it will not be able to pronounce harmful effect.
A planet will not be able to pronounce its result when it is placed 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th house from the house its rule. Similarly,
Badhakathipathi will not be able to pronounce its result when it is placed in 3rd, 6th, 8th or 12th house from Badhaka house.
For instance, consider Aries Ascendant. The Badhaka house is 11th house which is Aquarius
Sign and the house Lord i.e., Badhakathipathi is, Saturn.

If Saturn is placed in Aquarius itself without the association of any Benefic or Malefic, then its aspect on Ascendant, 5th house and 8th
house will be very harmful. As the aspect of Badhakathipathi Saturn falls on Ascendant and 8th house, the person's longevity will be impacted.
Similarly, the person's progeny will be impacted.
However, if a Benefic (say Jupiter) is in conjunct with Saturn or a Malefic (say Mars) is posited in 5th house, then Saturn will not be able
to pronounce harmful result.
Also, instead of Aquarius if Saturn is placed in Aries or Cancer or Virgo or Capricorn, it will not be able to pronounce any harmful result
because they are 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th house to Badhaka house respectively.

Sample : Shown below is the horoscope of a person who had autism and died at the age of 31. Though physically grown up, mentally
the person was just the age of 8 or 10.
Here, 6th house Lord Saturn and 8th house Lord Jupiter (Ashtamathipathi) aspect Ascendant. Moon, which represents Mind, is posited in 6th
house (Roga Sthanam) and gets the aspect of Saturn.
Mars too aspects Moon. Mars is Yogakarakan (Yogi) to Leo Ascendant as it is 4th and 9th house Lord and also it is Badhakathipathi
to Leo Ascendant. Mars is not associated with any other Planets.
As Mars is debilitated in Cancer sign, it will show its Badhakathipathi effect through the star it is posited on. Mars is posited on Pushya
(Pusam) star whose Lord is again Saturn.

Thus, Moon (the Mind) is totally afflicted because 1) Moon's house Cancer is afflicted by placement of debilitated Mars 2) Saturn aspects
Moon 3) Badhakathipathi Mars also aspects Moon.
This person was born on Shravishta (Avittam) star. The Dasha at the time of birth was Mars, followed by Rahu (posited on Saturn's star
Uttirattadi and Jupiter's house Pisces) and Jupiter Dasha.
The aspect of Saturn and Badhakathipathi Mars on the moon, aspect of Saturn on Ascendant and Mars Dasha at the time birth caused this person
mentally retarded from birth.
The native died on 21.08.2019 at 19.30 hrs. At the time of death, Transit Saturn and Transit Ketu were posited in Uttiradam star
(Sagittarius Sign) aspecting natal chart Venus (Marakathipathi for Leo Ascendant)
and Ashtamathipathi Jupiter Dasha was ruling.
The native survived this long (30+ years) because Ascendant Lord Sun was not afflicted and Jupiter is 5th house Lord as well.
Despite Mars is Yogi, its aspect on Moon, 3rd and 7th house was very harmful because it was posited alone. While its placement on Cancer and
its aspect on Moon caused the native Mentally retarded, its aspect on 3rd and 7th house impacted the longevity.
